Stardustballs: Speedy J x Dexter

A ideia mais comum que se faz de Speedy J não foge muito da catalogação como “monstro sagrado do techno”, ou algo tipo “um clássico do género”. E não há nada de errado nisso. Ele é essas coisas. Mas é também muito mais do que isso. De facto, se há uma marca registrada que se lhe possa atribuir, é a da diversidade. Há mais de 25 anos que o holandês Jochem Paap não sabe, nem quer, estar quieto e se calhar por isso, é dos poucos artistas de techno consensuais entre “old-schoolers” e recém-convertidos. Diz Jochem que, para o bem e para o mal, tem tendência a aborrecer-se depressa das coisas, o que é um traço de personalidade bastante compreensível, mas a juntar a isso, sempre existiram motivações algo mais abstractas. A busca incessante de traduzir em som coisas que ninguém mais tentou ou conseguiu sempre esteve subjacente ao seu trabalho e daí a tal marca registrada. Em 2017 é possível olhar para o seu extenso catálogo de produções e dizer que Speedy J é um nome fundamental no techno mais bombástico, rápido e escuro de início dos 2000, do IDM da época áurea da Warp/Rephlex, do acid techno, do ambient e electrónica experimental, e mesmo do techno hipnótico que mais recentemente tem planado sobre pistas de todo o mundo. E outra coisa que se pode dizer ainda agora, e sempre, é que ele é um incrível DJ de techno. Talvez já não tão focado na “velocidade” que lhe deu a alcunha, mas com todo o poder intacto. Já não é de rápidas rajadas de som de que falamos, mas sim em inexoráveis deslocações de lava sonora num dancefloor. Mas talvez o mais fundamental do que estabeleceu a “instituição” Speedy J, é o que ele herdou da cidade onde cresceu, Roterdão. A atitude “no-nonsense” de quem quando decide fazer algo, vai até ao fim, a atitude frontal e directa de quem sabe muito bem do que gosta, e a quase obsessão em ser sempre ele próprio, até ao fim, quaisquer que sejam as consequências. And there´s nothing wrong with that. He is those things. But he is also many other things. In fact, if there´s a trademark you can associate to him, it´s diversity. For more than 25 years, dutchman Jochem Paap doesn´t know how to be still and and doesn´t care about it either, so maybe that is why he is so consensual both with “old-schoolers” e recent converts to techno. Jochem is the first to say that for better or worse, he gets bored easily, which is a very relatable personality trait. But along with that, there have always been more lofty motivations. The incessant search to translate into sound things that nobody else ever achieved or even tried is something present all over his work, hence the trademark. In 2017 you can look at his extensive production catalogue and say he is a fundamental name in the fast, dark and bombastic techno sound of the early 00´s, of the golden age of Warp/Rephlex IDM, acid techno, ambient and experimental electronica and even of the brand of hypnotic techno that´s been floating through dancefloors in recent years. Another thing you can still say is that he is an incredible techno DJ. Maybe not as focused on the speed that gave him his nickname, but with all power intact. We´re not talking about fast gusts of wind anymore, we are talking about inexorable masses of sonic lava flowing through the dancefloor. But maybe the most important thing in establishing the Speedy J “institution” is what he inherited from the city he grew up in, Rotterdam. The “no-nonsense” attitude of someone that when he starts something, goes all the way, the straight and frontal attitude of someone who knows exactly what he likes and wants, and the almost obsessive drive to be himself always, until the end, no matter the consequences.
