STASERA Um dos músicos e agitadores mais activos em Lisboa nos últimos 10 anos, Afonso Simões é, quando produz música de dança, Stasera, mas veste alguns outros casacos: o de baterista dos Gala Drop, banda fulcral do underground sónico português, o de membro da Filho Único, outro colectivo que torna o nosso solo cultural mais fértil, o de DJ CRAZYMAN, enquanto disc jockey. Integra, intermitentemente, formações mutantes de música improvisada e foi membro de projectos já extintos como Fish & Sheep, Curia ou Phoebus. Editou os seus primeiros álbuns a solo pela Rafflesia, editora que fundou – onde foi editada também música de bandas tão importantes como Caveira ou Tropa Macaca. O caminho que Afonso Simões tem vindo a trilhar a solo tem, assim, a música electro-acustica como ponto de partida. Mais tarde a bateria transforma-se em ferramenta essencial, com uma abordagem pulsante e singular mesmo enquanto música improvisada. Tudo ingredientes que o ajudaram a moldar o som que hoje faz como Stasera: orgânico e percussivo, combinando a complexidade de quem escreve e a naturalidade de quem improvisa. O novo disco, agora nas ruas pela INTERZONA 13, editora de culto do nosso Tiago, é espelho cósmico dessa árvore de experiências. O som da Lisboa de agora, com história e futuro, em estreia no Lux. NIAGARA Estrearam-se em 2013 pela mais internacional das editoras underground portuguesas - a Príncipe Discos - mas antes disso já espalhavam frescura por Lisboa em concerto, deixavando adivinhar ao que vinham: mudar as regras da música house portuguesa. A soltura das suas composições desafiam, à partida, as expectativas que a maioria possa ter quanto às estruturas rítmicas da música de pista - grooves justos e equidistantes não constam na música do grupo - mas isso é em parte o motivo pelo qual são tão electrizantes. Juntos, os irmãos António e Alberto Arruda e Sara Eckerson, desenham livremente ocorrências rítmicas não quantizadas sobre kicks 4/4 com uma audácia exploratória notável, criando um som de jinga dançante ébria e despretensiosa que é também irresistível. Rapidamente fizeram disparar os alarmes dos melómanos mais atentos, um deles, Charles Drakeford (NTS), que os convidou para a sua editora From The Depths - uma das raras vezes que lançaram música fora da Príncipe Discos ou da sua própria editora Ascender, fundada em 2015, onde concebem edições em vinil e alguns albums em formato CDR (todos incríveis). Ao vivo são igualmente surpreendentes e cheios da frescura de quem não encaixa (facilmente) no campeonato em que corre - e é por isso que é importantíssimo vê-los. SEPYPES Apaixonou-se pelo techno no despontar dos 2000s, quando em Celourico de Basto acontecia ainda, em agosto, o festival CBT, que levou a essa vila do norte do país nomes como François K ou Jeff Mills. Estimulado pela vasta paleta sónica que aprendeu nas diferentes edições do festival, continuou a explorar a música de dança - e acabou por, como acontece com tantas futuras lendas do DJing, começar a empreender os seus próprios eventos: com Marisa Martins criou a promotora Synopsis em 2010; no mesmo ano arranca com as as festas Trip Visions, primeiro na sua Celorico de Basto, depois na região da bacia do rio Tâmega, e hoje um pouco por todo o Norte. Foi em grande medida nestes eventos que ganhou o estofo que agora apresenta como DJ: as suas mãos experientes já cativaram muito público ao longo de quase cem edições; os seus ouvidos já testemunharam sets de alguns dos melhores DJs do país - seus convidados - e, claro, a sua empatia pelo público fez com que aprendesse também com o feedback que dele vinha. Sepypes não é só um enorme embaixador da música de dança no norte de Portugal, também é um DJ que nos leva a viajar do etéreo ao sombrio com o seu techno sem pretensões, movido apenas pelo amor genuíno à missão de fazer dançar e suar fora tudo o que não interessa. Textos: Inês Coutinho \\ ENGLISH // STASERA One of the most active musicians and agitators in the past decade in Lisbon, Afonso Simões is, when he produces dance music, Stasera, but he wears plenty other hats: he's the drummer for Gala Drop, seminal band of portugal's sonic underground, he's a member of Filho Único, another collective that makes our cultural territory all the more fertile, he's DJ CRAZYMAN when he deejays. He intermittently integrates improvised music collectives and has been a member of now.defunct projects like Fish & Sheep, Curia and Phoebus. He released his first solo albums in Rafflesia, the labele he founded himself - where he also put out music by bands as important as Caveira or Tropa Macaca. The path that Afonso Simões has been carving as a solo artist sees electro-acoustic music as a starting point. Later on, the drum kit turns into an essential tool, with a pulsating, singular approach even for improvised music. All of these are certainly ingredients that helped him shape his sound he creates today as Stasera: organic and percussive, combining the complexity reserved to those who write and the flow of those who improvise. His new record, now out through INTERZONA 13, cult label run by our Tiago, is a cosmic mirror to the endless ramifications of his experiences. The sound of the Lisbon of now, with both history and future, debuts at Lux. NIAGARA Niagara's debut was in 2013 through one of Portugal's most globally known underground labels, Príncipe Discos. But even before that, they were already spreading serious freshness via their live shows in a bunch of Lisbon's smaller venues, leaving us all clued up to what they came here to do: to change the rules of portuguese house music, of course. The looseness of their compositions promptly challenged the expectations many attribute to the rhythmic structures of conventional dancefloor music - there are no tightly knit, equidistant grooves in sight here. But that's partly why their music feels so compelling. Together, brothers Arruda and Sara Eckerson, draw non-quantised rhythmic sequences over 4/4 kicks, freely and with a remarkable exploratory dexterity, creating an unpretentious and almost drunk cadence that's also irresistible. Quickly they got discovered by many of the leftfield dance music intelligentsia, among them Charles Drakeford of NTS, who invited them for his From The Depths label - a rare occasion where they've released outside of Príncipe Discos or their own Ascender imprint, created in 2015 to put out a string of CDR and vinyl releases. Their live shows are just as unpredictable and packed with the same freshness that is unique to those that don't easily fit into their own lane - that being exactly why it's so vital to follow them closely. SEPYPES He fell in love with techno in the beginning of the 2000s, when in Celourico de Basto CBT was still happening every august - a festival that took names like François K or Jeff Mills to the northern Portuguese town. Stimulated by the vast sonic palette that he was exposed to in each new festival edition, he went on to further explore dance music - and ended up, like many a future DJ legend, starting his own events: with Marisa Martins he created the promoter Synopsis in 2010; the same year marks the beginning of his series of parties Trip Visions, first in his Celourico de Basto, then in the region surrounding river Tâmega and, nowadays, spread over the north of Portugal. It was, to great extent, in these events that he cut his teeth as a DJ: his experienced hands have captivated a respectable amount of crowd thoughout near 100 editions; his ears have witnessed sets by some of the country's best DJs - his guests - and, obviously, the empathy for his crowd helped him learn with their feedback. Sepypes is not only a great dance music ambassador in the north of Portugal, he is also a DJ that takes us on a journey from ethereal to somber with his unpretentious techno, moved solely by the genuine love to the mission of making people dance and sweat out all that doesn't matter.
